How to Make Your Own Sushi

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg sushi rice
  • 1.2 liters of water
  • 12 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 200 g raw tuna
  • 200 g fresh salmon (sushi quality)
  • 150 g cooked shrimp
  • 2 avocados
  • 1 mango
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 1/2 red bell pepper
  • 1 carrot
  • 100 g cream cheese
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped spring onions
  • 2 tbsp fried onions
  • 2 tbsp black & white sesame seeds
  • 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds
  • 8 nori sheets
  • Bamboo mat for rolling
  • 2 tbsp sriracha
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp Unagi sauce (Japanese teriyaki-like sauce)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil

Directions:

  1. Begin by washing the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and helps the rice cook better.
  2. Cook the rice with 1.2 liters of water according to your rice cooker or stove instructions. Once cooked, let it cool down a bit.
  3. In a small bowl, mix together the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Once the rice is cool, gently fold the vinegar mixture into the rice. Let it cool completely.
  4. Take a bamboo mat and lay out a sheet of nori, shiny side down.
  5. Spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving about 2 cm at the top edge.
  6. Add your desired fillings, such as raw tuna, salmon, cooked shrimp, avocado, mango, cucumber, red bell pepper, carrot, and cream cheese.
  7. Roll the sushi tightly from the bottom up, using the bamboo mat to help you.
  8. Once rolled, slice the sushi into bite-sized pieces with a sharp knife.
  9. Arrange the sushi on a plate and garnish with spring onions, fried onions, sesame seeds, and pomegranate seeds.
  10. Serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi for dipping.

How to Serve Your Own Sushi

Serve your homemade sushi on a beautiful platter. You can garnish it with spring onions, fried onions, and sesame seeds to make it look more appealing. Offer soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi on the side for an extra kick in flavor.

How to Store Your Own Sushi

If you have leftover sushi, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Enjoy within a day or two for the best taste. Note that the rice may harden in the fridge, so it’s best to consume sushi fresh.
